This workshop is FREE as it is funded by West Sussex Parent Carer Forum.

FEATURING: For families of a disabled or vulnerable people it’s important to consider how to provide for that person if you are no longer there to care for them. Having an up to date Will in place goes some way to protect them, but it also has the potential to create further problems. For example, leaving a lump sum to a disabled person may put them in a vulnerable position or could result in their means tested benefits being affected. Philip Warford explained how Wills and Trusts can be used to protect the vulnerable and ensure benefits are not lost.

APRIL 2017

Information Event: COFFEE CAKE AND NETWORKING MEETING

DATE: Wednesday 5th April 2017, 10.30am – 1.00pm

VENUE: Bersted Park Community Centre, Lakeland Avenue, Bognor Regis, PO21 5FF

FEATURING: Coffee, Cake and Information Networking once again headed to Bersted Park Community. We were joined by KIDS, The Local Offer, Reaching Families, Amaze (Compass Card), Benefits Adviser, PASCO, Specialist Dental Nurses, Challengers, Victim Support, Novio, Abacus Healthcare – who brought a bath!!, Choice Team, Oak Community Project, Toy Library, Carers Support, Healthwatch, an Educational Psychologist and Independent Lives….. all of whom came to either support parent carers or offer half term activities for children with special educational needs and disabilites.


MARCH 2017

Information Event: FIRST STEPS TO ADULTHOOD

DATE: Wednesday 8th March 2017, 6.00 to 8.00pm

VENUE: Horsham Youth Centre, Hurst Road, Horsham, RH12 2DN

FEATURING: An Information Sharing Drop in Event for parent carers with young people aged 14+, stalls and information were provided by appropriate services and organisations who were available to discuss: Benefits, Sport and Leisure, West Sussex Local Offer, Discount Cards, Specific Disability Organisations, Supporting young people into paid employment. Cakes were provided by JubyLee Bakes and baked by SEND award winning young entrepreneurs.


FEBRUARY 2017

INFORMATION EVENT: Wills and Trusts – Planning for the Future

DATE: Wednesday 15th February 2017, 7.00pm – 9.30pm

VENUE: Roffey Millenium Hall, Bramber Room, Crawley Road, Horsham, RH12 4DT

FEATURING: This workshop was facilitated by Renaissance Legal and explained how Wills and Trusts are used to protect the vulnerable and ensure benefits are not lost.


JANUARY 2017

INFORMATION EVENT: Expert Parent Programme and Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS): Workshop

DATE: Tuesday 31st January 2017, 9.30-2.30pm

VENUE: Roffey Millenium Hall, Crawley Road, Horsham, RH12 4DT

FEATURING: This workshop enabled parent carers to understand more about Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and increased own understanding to benefit their own familiy. It also helped to increase confidence when dealing with health professionals and advised on how to make the best of your time with them.


INFORMATION EVENT: Mental Capacity, Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection Explained

DATE: Wednesday 25th January 2017, 7.00pm – 9.30pm

VENUE: Roffey Millenium Hall, Bramber Room, Crawley Road, Horsham, RH12 4DT

FEATURING: This information event facilitated by Renaissance Legal informed parent carers of the legislation around Mental Capacity and advised what they legally needed to do to be able to continue support their young people as the become young adults aged 16+ to make good decisions.


Information Event: COFFEE CAKE AND NETWORKING MEETING

DATE: Friday 20th January 2017, 10.30am – 1.00pm

FEATURING: Coffee, Cake and Information Networking once again headed to Crawley. We were joined by a number of organisations some of whom supported parent carers and others who offered half term activities for children with special eduaction needs and disabilites.


DECEMBER 2016

INFORMATION EVENT: The Expert Parent Programme

DATE: Thursday 1st December 2016, 9.30am for a 10am start – 2.00pm

This training was delivered to a small number of parent carers who all have children with complex needs, the training empowered parent carers to be able to speak to professionals and the parent carers learnt more about how the health system works.

NOVEMBER 2016

Information Event: COFFEE CAKE AND NETWORKING MEETING

DATE: Wednesday 9th November 2016, 10.30am – 1.00pm

VENUE: Jubilee Community Centre, Charlwoods Rd, East Grinstead RH19 2HL

FEATURING: Coffee, Cake and Information Networking headed to East Grinstead for the first time, supported by Special Families East Grinstead. Many organisations attended passing on support and information to all the attendees. Family Fund also attended and put on IPAD training.


INVITATION: Celebratory Lunch and Annual General Meeting

DATE: Friday 4 November 2016, 12.00pm – 2.00pm

VENUE: Arora Hotel, Southgate Avenue, Crawley, RH10 6LW


The AGM was attended by over 50 people, attendees heard what the Forum had been doing over the last year and what the future will look like. Lunch was enjoyed by all. Ranti Fallowfield stepped down from Trustee to sit on the Management Team, and Gráinne Saunders stepped up from Management Team to Trustee.

OCTOBER 2016

Information Event: COFFEE CAKE AND NETWORKING MEETING

DATE: Wednesday 19th October 2016, 10.30am – 1.00pm

VENUE: Worthing Rugby Club, Roundstone Lane, Angmering, BN16 4AX

FEATURING: This was an opportunity to meet and chat with various organisations, get support, pick information up and meet other parent carers. LAROMA THERAPIES also attended and gave free taster massages to the attendees. Over 60 people attended.


JULY 2016

TRAINING EVENT: Understand me – Communicating With Pictures

DATE: Tuesday 5 July 2016, 10.30am – 12.30pm

This training gave parent carers an opportunity to learn how to communicate and help their children’s behaviour by using pictures.

VENUE: Billingshurst Community Centre, Roman Way, Billingshurst, RH14 9EW

FEATURED: FREE I-PAD Training – Family Fund ran two free session at with an Apple approved SEN Education Trainer who answered questions that parent carers asked, They explored all the accessibility and safety features. An Educational Psychologist and members of the Special Educational Needs Assessment Team (SENAT) also attended to answer questions.

FOCUS GROUP INVITATION:

DETAILS: We have brought together parent carers of young people to share experiences of transition (aged 14+) and to discuss how transition could be made easier. These sessions were supported by West Sussex County Council. This focus group will be ongoing.

FEATURING: The Compass Card- A new discount leisure card for West Sussex


DETAILS: Once again a well attended meeting, with stands attending from all over West Sussex. A big thank you goes to Samantha who is a parent carer herself and runs a new business called The Olive Tree based in Bognor who donated many of the cakes which the attendees all ate.

TRAINING EVENT: VISUALISING BETTER SUPPORT FOR PARENT CARERS IN WEST SUSSEX

DATE: Wednesday 3rd February 2015, arrive from 9.30am for a 10.00am start – finishes 2.00pm

VENUE: Lodge Hill, Bradbury Hall, Watersfield, Pulborough, RH20 1LZ

DETAILS: The event was attended by over 75 people, parent carers, different organisations all supporting children / young people and West Sussex County Council. Attendees looked at what provisions are currently in West Sussex and what the gaps are and were encouraged to network and get to know each other and what each other does, this is a piece of work that will continue into the future to ensure the provision needed in West Sussex is available to those who need it.

TRAINING EVENT: CREATING CIRCLES OF FRIENDS

DATE: Friday 12th February 2015, arrive from 9.30am for a 10.00am start – finishes 2.30pm

DETAILS:This event was sold out, with over 50 people attending from different organisations from all over West Sussex, all the feedback we received was positive, the learning from this day will help parent carers and professionals support children and young people to get and keep friends – something we all want our children to have.

What an amazing meeting with stand holders from Carers Support West Sussex, Farm Buddies, Carer Heath Team, Reaching Families, Amaze – Compass Card, Benefits Advisor, Early Support, West Sussex Heathy Child Project and the Oral Health Team. Over 70 professionals and parent carers (some with children) attended. Lots of advice and support on offer, great atmosphere and great cake.

JULY 2015

EVENT: Autism Vision for West Sussex

DATE: 8th July 2015

VENUE: Fontwell Race Course Conference Centre

DETAILS: This recent event was a follow-on from the survey that West Sussex County Council sent out at the beginning of the year to schools and parents. A very well attended event with more than 120 attendees: parent carers, professionals, County Council staff and school delegates. The purpose of the event was to look at the vision of autism and at resources available within West Sussex. There will be a follow up next year.
